CORE PRINCIPLES.
Brutalist web design is not just about making things look ugly. It is governed by a strict set of design philosophies that challenge conventional UX/UI norms.
01 // RAW TYPOGRAPHY
Fonts are used at extreme sizes. System fonts like Courier, Arial, or Times New Roman are preferred over custom web fonts. Text is often uppercase, heavily weighted, and used as a primary visual element rather than just a vehicle for information.
02 // VISIBLE STRUCTURE
Grids, borders, and layout lines are not hidden; they are celebrated. The underlying architecture of the page is exposed to the user, emphasizing the constructed nature of the web.
03 // HIGH CONTRAST & HARSH COLORS
Color palettes are limited and aggressive. Stark black and white dominate, occasionally interrupted by harsh primary colors like pure red, blue, or yellow. Gradients and soft transitions are strictly forbidden.
04 // FUNCTION OVER FORM
While the aesthetic is highly stylized, the underlying principle is functional honesty. Elements look like what they are. Buttons look like buttons. Links look like links. There is no skeuomorphism, no hidden interactions.
